What is aromatherapy all about?

Previous Lesson Print this Lesson Discuss this Lesson Next Lesson

Aromatherapy is a part of a greater movement of complementary and alternative medicine. It deals with affecting the health and mood using essential oils or other aromatic compounds. It is always used only as a support of other treatments and is never used alone – even in France, where it is a part of a mainstream medicine. While it may greatly increase the chances of recovery, bear in mind that any decent aromatherapy correspondence course will admit the supportive role of aromatherapy. If it does otherwise, leave it – it promises more that it can give.

Aromatherapy correspondence course

There are many reasons for taking an aromatherapy correspondence course – expanding your knowledge on alternative health matters, job opportunities or simply looking for a new hobby. Whatever is the reason, oftentimes you might find yourself disappointed with the course you've taken. The sad truth is that many aromatherapy correspondence courses are little more than a pamphlet about benefits of aromatherapy and a few “lessons” that can't teach you anything new. If you want to profit from the course, you simply have to choose the right one. In order to do this, you have to know three things: what aromatherapy is, what is included in a course and what correspondence/online school organizes the course.

What should be inside a correspondence course?

The content of an aromatherapy correspondence course often varies a lot. There nothing wrong with that, as aromatherapy is more an art than a science and a having very individual view on it is very common among the courses' authors. However, there are still some issues that should be a part of every aromatherapy correspondence course. These are: types and subtypes of essential oils (one generic name is often used to describe several different oils with different effects), the dangers of aromatherapy (for example, there are oils that can seriously irritate the skin and you should know what to do) and sample treatments.

Finding the right school

If the aromatherapy correspondence course seems to be ok, you're already halfway there. All that's left is to check if the school is a reliable institution. Paradoxically, it is wiser to chose a course offered by a general online or correspondence course center to those prepared by aromatherapy or alternative medicine organizations. The latter tend to be too concentrated on promoting their own products rather than giving lessons.
